Quabbin NJROTC Mission Statement

To create informed and responsible citizens by instilling in cadets a sense of accomplishment, confidence, self-discipline, and respect through the development of leadership skills and academic achievement.

Our Core Values

Honor, Courage and Commitment

Ultimately, leadership is not about glorious crowning acts. It’s about keeping your team focused on a goal and motivated to do their best to achieve it, especially when the stakes are high and the consequences really matter. It is about laying the groundwork for others’ success, and then standing back and letting them shine.” -Chris Hadfield

Quabbin NJROTC Guiding Principles

  1. Know yourself and seek self-improvement: Strengthen your character through self-study, formal classes, reflection, and interacting with others that motivate you.

  2. Seek responsibility and be accountable for your actions: Seek ways to take yourself and others to new heights. When things go wrong, do not blame others. Instead take corrective action, and move on to the next challenge.

  3. Make sound and timely decisions: Develop and use good problem solving, decision making, and planning skills using the NJROTC agenda, Admiral McRaven’s guide, the Seven Habits and JJDIDTIEBUCKLE.

  4. Set the example: Be a good role model for your fellow Cadets and students. They must see and hear what they are expected to do. “We must become the change we want to see” — Mahatma Gandhi

  5. Train as a team: Motivate and encourage one another to achieve the highest level of success together. Receive and provide constructive feedback from/to those around you to ensure we are at our very best.

SMART Goals

Specific: Your goal should be clear and specific, otherwise you won’t be able to focus your efforts or feel truly motivated to achieve it. When drafting your goal, try to answer the five “W” questions:

  • What do I want to accomplish?

  • Why is this goal important?

  • Who is involved?

  • Where is it located?

  • Which resources or limits are involved?

Measurable: It is important to have measurable goals, so that you can track your progress and stay motivated. Assessing progress helps you stay focused, meet your deadlines, and feel the excitement of getting closer to achieving your goal. A measurable goal should address questions such as:

  • How much?

  • How many?

  • How will I know when it’s accomplished?

Achievable: Your goal needs to be realistic and attainable to be successful. In other words, it should stretch your abilities but still remain possible. When you set an achievable goal, you may be able to identify previously overlooked opportunities or resources that can bring you closer to it. An achievable goal will usually answer the questions such as:

  • How can I accomplish this goal?

  • How realistic is the goal, based on other constraints, such as time and financial factors?

Relevant: This step is about ensuring this goal matters to you, and also aligns with other relevant goals. We may need support and assistance in achieving our goals, but it is important to maintain control over them. So, make sure that your plans move everyone forward, but that you’re still responsible for achieving your own goal. A relevant goal can answer these questions:

  • Does it seem worthwhile

  • Is this the right time?

Time-bound: Every goal needs a target date, so that you have a deadline to focus on and something to work toward. This part of the SMART goal criteria helps prevent everyday tasks from taking priority over your long-term goals. A time-bound goal usually answers these questions:

  • When can I start?

  • When I can expect to finish?

  • Will this be enough time to complete my goal?
